What We Can Do For You?

Our experience encompasses a wide range of subset areas including: Business transactional law, business litigation, employment law, commercial collections, and business preventative law.

With over 50 years of experience, the principals of Tiedt & Hurd have built their reputations providing effective and aggressive representation for their business clientele.

Though litigation is the foundation on which the firm’s practice was built (the partners at Tiedt & Hurd have far-ranging experience in litigating a wide variety of matters in both state and federal courts, and before various arbitration forums and administrative agencies), we know that successful litigation in this context requires an understanding of when to “flex your muscle” and when to use our “power of persuasion.”  We believe that the successful litigator needs to know where to draw the line.  We pride ourselves in always keeping in mind the interest of our clients, that our clients are well-informed as to the progress of their cases, and to make sure that they receive a “fair shake.”  As a business owner, you likely make cost/benefit assessments every day. Your decisions on legal issues should be no different.

John E. Tiedt was born in Anaheim, California and grew up in Placentia, California.  He graduated from UCLA in 1983 and Pepperdine University School of Law in 1987.

John specializes in solving business problems for clients, and has been doing so since 1988.  He began his career with a reputable mid-sized law firm in Brentwood, California. During that time, he was fortunate to represent a diverse clientele, including post production companies, production companies, doctors, medical groups, hospitals, leasing companies, construction companies, and manufacturers.  Early in his career, John learned an important truth: a lawyer does not know how to truly draft a contract until a lawyer has litigated contracts in a courtroom to verdict.  By understanding how contracts are reviewed and enforced by judges, he is able to write agreements that he knows will be enforced in a court of law.

With over a quarter century of trial and business transaction experience, John confidently leads his clients to success in transactional matters as well as litigation and arbitration.  Having tried many cases, John takes pride in providing the type of counseling to his clients that prevents lawsuits from happening at the transaction stage.  John initiated the firm’s unique risk assessment program for businesses  in Southern California. The program involves a detailed evaluation of the risks of a particular business and then developing a program to eliminate or mitigate those risks.  John has developed tools for businesses to address a wide variety of risks.  John believes that it is imperative that lawyers should work hard to make businesses safer and compliant with the law.

John’s cases have been reported in professional publications and in national media. He has also been admitted to practice pro hac vice in 15 states to handle a variety of notable cases while winning millions of dollars in verdicts for his clients. His current practice includes clients in the following counties: Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego Counties.  He is assisted by his partner Marc Hurd, the firm’s associates and conscientious staff.  His business clients have included: Cesar Milan; Deluxe Digital Media; Manhattan Beach Studios; Montage, LLC; Titan Investments; MCW Fuels, Inc.; Wells Fargo; EDS; Storage Tek; ElectroFilm; Program Beta; Bear Valley Health Care District; LA Digital, Inc.; and many other companies.

John is blessed with a kind and loving wife, six great children and two (soon to be three) wonderful grandchildren.  He proudly resides in Corona where he attends Saddleback Church and Corona Friends Church (two wonderful Churches).  John has been, and still is, active in the sporting and academic activities of his children.

Employment Law, Business Litigation, Corporate Collections

University of California at Los Angeles, B.A. cum laude, 1984

University of California, Hastings College of the Law, J.D., 1987

State Bar of California; Riverside County Bar Association

California State Bar, 1987; U.S. District Court, Northern, Eastern, Central and Southern Districts of California since 1988.

After 19 years working in larger firms, Marc joined up with his long-time friend and colleague, John Tiedt, to form Tiedt & Hurd in February 2007.  The practice focuses on business transactions and litigation, employment law matters and corporate collections.

Mr. Hurd graduated cum laude in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA.  He then graduated from Hasting College of the Law in June of 1987 and was admitted to practice law in California in December of that year.  At Hastings, he was president of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and an active member of the Associated Students.

A veteran of numerous trials, Mr. Hurd has developed the keen trial skills necessary to successfully advocate for his clients, and understands that litigation today requires preparation, hard work and a willingness to “go the distance.”  Yet, with that experience comes the respect for the judicial system that recognizes that many cases can, and should, be resolved by utilizing alternative means.  With that in mind, Mr. Hurd has also resolved hundreds of cases through arbitration, mediation and negotiation of settlements.

Mr. Hurd also recognizes that often the “best defense” in litigation is not to get sued in the first place.  So, Mr. Hurd offers  “preventative legal medicine,” to assist clients in facing  issues before they become actual problems.  By applying the “ounce of prevention” approach, business may avoid or minimize the costs of the “cure” down the road.

Married with two children, Marc has been active in his community, working with the YMCA Indian Guide Program, and coaching Little League Baseball and youth soccer.  He is also Rotarian, and he and the firm are members of  the Corona Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Li then moved to the United States and received her Juris Doctorate Degree (law degree) and an LL.M. degree (Master  of Laws degree) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011.  During law school, Ms. Li won the CALI award, which is awarded to the student with the highest grade in a given class, on two occasions. After graduating from University of Illinois College of Law, Yue Li relocated to the Southern California and was admitted to practice in the State of California in 2012. Ms. Li specializes in business transactions and business litigation. Being bi-lingual in English and Chinese, Ms. Li focuses on companies and clients doing business in China and/or with Chinese ties.  She has drafted and reviewed many complicated agreements, including  OEM Agreements, licenses and commercial leases. Even though Ms. Li specializes in corporate transactions, she has served as advisor on business litigation matters; she recently served in a critical role as a trial attorney in a business trial in Los Angeles County wherein she helped win a $660,000 judgment for her client.
